      Nur-Sultan by Javier Arcenillas

Kazakhstan renamed its capital Nur-Sultan in honour of its former president, Nursultan Nazarbayev, who resigned in 2019 after holding power for three decades. Formerly known as Akmola (‘white tomb’) and then later Astana (‘the capital’), the city was first designated as the capital by Nazarbayev in 1997, replacing Almaty. Until then, it was only a remote corner of the former USSR, a region known for its icy climate and for hosting one of Stalin's notorious Gulags. Conceived by Nazarbayev, Nur-Sultan was designed to befit a country rich in minerals and oil. He recruited the talents of renowned architects such as Sir Norman Foster and over time constructed a city of concrete and glass, full of impressive futuristic buildings, huge shopping centres and enviable sports halls. What was once a forgotten and inhospitable territory is today a city of 800,000 inhabitants, as incredible and eccentric as any of its wealthier neighbours.

      Blueprint by YunChi Chen

In 1842, Sir John Herschel discovered the cyanotype. At a time when printing techniques were still developing, the cyanotype was the most efficient and stable printing method.Traditionally, the cyanotype was used in blueprints and to produce photographic prints. In this work, I imitate the process of creating a cyanotype by using digital post-production techniques to retrace the outlines of the buildings. The result is a multi-layered image resembling an architectural blueprint.

      Dorf by Domagoj Burilovi?

‘Dorf’ is the German word for village. In the 19th century, the Croatian region of Slavonia was inhabited by people from all nations of the Austro-Hungary empire. A fast economic development began with the exploitation of forest and land. Villages became an elementary demographic unit. German colonists made the largest cultural impact through language, crafts and architecture. Instead of building with mud, people started to build with baked bricks – this raised the quality of life.

The irony of history is that today, due to the impact of the war in Croatia and subsequent  industry decline, the population is leaving Slavonia for Germany, in search of a better life. With the extinction of the village, the historic houses that became part of its cultural identity are the first to decay. These photographs are a photo montage of houses and local nature. Exploitation of nature was the reason these houses came into being – now this very nature is destroying them

United Nations Renovations by Mark Henley

The United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG)  – including the Palais des Nations, the organisation's principle European offices, dating from the 1930s – is under renovation. It’s part of a controversial $800 million project, with cost overruns, and brings into question whether the organisation itself is fit for purpose. This is a personal project, with a personal interest. As a member of the Press accredited to the United Nations in Geneva, I am directly affected by this work, and have had to move from the office that I rented within the Palais.

Geometric Hong Kong by Jason Au

Geometric Hong Kong is a black-and-white street photography series that depicts my creative vision of my hometown. It comes with a fine art aesthetic and the compositional approach of isolating urban subjects, geometric elements and forms from the chaotic urban environment of Hong Kong.

This series portrays the way of life for different urban characters in the context of their surrounding geometric environment – all captured from mundane everyday scenes, with fleeting moments seized from near and far. The minimalist approach seemingly contrasts with the maximalism of the dense Hong Kong cityscape, famously known as a concrete jungle.

These subjects look trapped and lost inside an artificial geometric labyrinth without realising it. Perhaps this series is also a metaphorical view of urbanity and the hectic contemporary way of life in a metropolis like Hong Kong.

Condensed Urban Landscapes by Rene Cassio Scholz

Every city has its own unique history and personality. My city portraits combine the diverse impressions, discoveries and events of a place into one picture. The compositions are inspired by vedute of the 17th and 18th centuries, but in a contemporary reality that includes objects of street art, public art, advertising signs and shopping areas as symbols of everyday urban life. Using digital collage techniques to merge a large number of my individual images, cityscapes turn into something between documentation and staging. All single photos were taken in Spain, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Morocco and Germany.

2021+II: Utopia Broadcasting by Serena Dzenis

Do you think that the first space colony created by mankind will happen during your lifetime? Technology has advanced so quickly over the past few years. In the overall scheme of things, we’re just a flash in the pan –  and yet we’ve done so much to change our planet. Humankind is leaving a lasting impact on Earth, turning it into the paradise that we want it to be or perhaps the paradise that we’ve lost.

2021+ II: Utopia Broadcasting encapsulates everything about human construction, sheer curiosity, consumerism, as well as the wonders and dangers associated with science. The overall aim of this project is to transport the viewer’s imagination to another world that exists outside of time – and in doing so, to invoke conversation around themes of futurism amidst the darker side of human ideals.

All of these images were taken in 2021 in Iceland, during the pandemic

Sometimes the Sky Above us is Open by Sarah Grethe

This work examines the concept of home. I accompanied my mother's return to the place where she grew up: a farm in southern Germany.

We searched for the past in the present. In the confrontation of an idealised view, tensions between familiarity and strangeness, constancy and change became visible. They demonstrate how home and origin can be both supportive and constricting. The title is a quote from a letter my mother sent to her parents in 1999. When she found it again, while doing research for this project, she couldn't believe what she had written. Narratives of a time that will never return like this emerged. How does home change for a person when they haven’t lived there for a long time? And when they return?

      New Waves by Rapha?l Neal

This is a collection of teenagers’ portraits, paired with landscapes and inspired by global warming issues. Heatwaves, wildfires or floods are evoked in a cinematic way. The presence of teens – including several young activists – implies the growing threats that the next generation will have to deal with because of climate change, and its inevitable consequences on their physical and mental health.

‘Danger’ and ‘beauty’ were the two words I kept in mind while producing the series: it had to look both engaging and uncomfortable. A contradiction that reminded me of how we have recently been astonished by dangerously high summer temperatures, while accommodating ourselves to them. I also wanted to show different attitudes of today's youth: some look defiant and strong, but others are frightened. I didn’t want to show this ultra-combative youth that exists only in discourses and advertisements.

      Mellow Apocalypse by Alnis Stakle

I am interested in the fate of canonised artistic, scientific and journalistic images and their potential to embody contemporary meanings. For my collages, I have used images from the open source collections at art museums, scientific institutions and image banks, whose archives may be considered iconic testimonies of the present and the past. The collages are grounded in my search for syntactic visual language connections pertaining to various periods, media and domains of visual culture. The collages make use of the ideas and technical codes established in visual communication that transcend the borderlines of ages, media and cultures:the codes that are so deeply ingrained in culture that they are used without thinking, and are understood through pre-existing schemas in the recipients’ minds.

      Indoor Stories by Ioana Moldovan

I’ve never felt comfortable enough to turn the camera towards myself and my private life in a photographic project. The Covid-19 pandemic changed that. Indoor Stories started as a joke, with an improvised carpet picnic on Valentine’s Day. It continued as a fun ‘search’, finding inspiration in the little daily stuff. The little things we didn’t pay much attention to before. But with our home becoming our entire universe, these things tend to gain a whole new meaning. Yet, even at home, we find ourselves still wearing a mask.

Lost, Found and Seen by Peter Franck

These pictures represent the question of what remains of cities; what persists. What will still be spellbinding in the future. Will man still admire the structure of old masonry stones when cars drive without wheels? When will the modern become a cultural legacy? What will remain from our here and now – light and shadow, and the stories that will never change? A game between analogue and digital, a time leap into a new, surreal world, opening into a new reality. The shown space plays a role as a period of time as well as an optically experiential space. It creates a stage for stories from the wise men of the past through to the present and into the future, in which cars floating through the neighborhood and the noise of the street belongs to the past.

Accepting his growing-up is difficult for me. For quite a while I refused to admit this to myself, as the excessive anxiety for the child seemed justified. After all, the child was still very young. But when will he be grown up enough to recognise himself as a separate person from his mother?

Here, I explore the topic of psychological separation between me and my son. We are not a single whole, but different people. And that's great but it's still not so easy at first. fear and anxiety for the child sometimes take over. This story is about my feelings and fears, expressed metaphorically. A story about how overprotection and attachment can become traumatic

'A Thing Like War' Hunger after Conflict by Hugh Kinsella Cunningham

In the rolling hills of the provinces of Kasa?, Democratic Republic of Congo, communities are reeling from the aftershocks of conflict. As with many conflicts in the Congo, fighting was swift and brutal, but a majority of deaths in affected communities occur during the waves of disease and hunger that follow. People are forced away from their homes and fields en masse.

Most families carry immense burdens and psychological trauma, stories of children lost to starvation or fighting are common. Long-term thinking is impossible here, the aspirations of parents can only stretch to how to feed their family for one more day, always on the verge of disaster.

Using double exposures, these ghostly portraits bring together the tension of life for mothers in Kasa?, living in beautiful land, but unable to provide for their families.

Dead Country by Marius Ionut Scarlat

Dead Country is a project that explores the significance of death in Romanian culture and religion. This is a personal project about my grandmother and the relationship she has with death, the objects and clothes that she has collected over the years – and that she will use the day of her funeral. My grandmother lives with death; the orthodox rituals and traditions she follows are daily reminders of her own mortality and that of others.

I Came To La Pinta Because They Told Me My Father Lived Here by Alejandra Aragón

The title of this project was inspired by the opening sentence in the emblematic Mexican novel Pedro Páramo. Like the protagonist in that story, I too began a journey between Mexico and the United States to find my biological father. In the process, I discovered how the wounds of my family are linked to the demands of hegemonic masculinity and the displacements of the agricultural towns from northern Mexico. I returned to the hometowns my family came from to find them being disputed by organised crime and the government’s neoliberal agenda. Both state and father figure broke their promises, and there is no motherland to return to from exile.

To define the visual language of this story I used images from the family photo album alongside ones I've taken during my travels with analogue film cameras. I avoided using a DSLR in order to both question the codes under which violence in Mexico is commonly portrayed and protect the intimacy of the story. The colours of the infrared film (an outdated military technology) reveals an invisible spectrum of light, creating a dystopian atmosphere. It’s complemented by the voices of family members and fragments of corridos, a storytelling genre in popular music.

      Insurrection by Win McNamee

Following a ‘Save America’ rally held by President Donald Trump, a mob of thousands of his supporters descended on the US Capitol and fought their way into the building on 6 January 2021. Members of the mob were called to action by Trump and urged to “fight like hell” after months of disinformation disputing the results of the 2020 presidential election.

The Long Days of Hanau by Fabian Ritter

The racist attack of 19 February 2020 in Hanau, Hessen, shook German society. This photo essay accompanies the friends and relatives of those tragically murdered. In the weeks and months following the attack, while an entire city was still reeling from the shock, solidarity groups and initiatives began forming to support the survivors of the attack. Mourning developed into anger and the desire for change. These photographs provide intimate access to the families and friends affected, who have all lost important people in their lives.

      Pandora’s Algorithm by Moses Omeogo

Just as Prometheus bestowed fire upon humanity, knowledge grows with every achievement scientists bring forth. As titans of the new age, they wield wisdom and power. With rapid developments in quantum computing, various implications for the future arise. Among those are benefits and uncertainties. However, these are only known to a select few. Therefore, alienation thrives between those who seek answers and the individuals that fail to comprehend their questions. Our world continues to be driven to a state in which science blurs the boundaries of reality. This photographic series explores the developments and implications of quantum computing. By using a selection of staged, documentary and still life pictures it exposes various intertwining narratives of science, simulation and hidden power structures.

The Two Walls by Alejandro Cegarra

Through its policy of denying asylum using the Migrant Protection Protocol and Title 4, the United States has left thousands of people waiting for asylum hearings in dangerous Mexican border cities. Mexico acts as a co-enforcer, militarising its border to detain migrants – building a physical, administrative and psychological barrier shutting out migrants and asylum seekers from all parts of the world.

Today, more than ever, the politics of the borders negate the desperate plight of these migrants. They find themselves trapped in a bureaucratic limbo increasingly neglectful of their human rights.

      Modern Slavery by Havard Bjelland

In the Karonga district of Malawi, work in the mines is a matter of life and death. Every night, Pililan Mzuma prays to survive the next day.. The miners work hard over long days for bad salaries, sometimes waiting months for the money. Without necessary protective gear the conditions are dangerous for the workers. Gresswell Kayange was in the mine in 2019 when big stones fell over him. He was paralysed and is still waiting for compensation. When the political leaders of the world sat down in Glasgow to “phase out” coal, Layson Ngwira and his colleagues kept working calmly in Karonga.

Without a homeland – the contended land by Andrea Bettancini

There is a slim triangle of land along the perfectly horizontal line that separates Egypt from Sudan, which has always been claimed by both countries. It is the Halayeb-Shalateen triangle, currently under Egyptian rule. Starting from Sudan's independence in 1956, border relations with Egypt have been characterised more by reciprocal suspicion than by peaceful exchanges.

Shalateen is the main outpost of the territory and it is also the most important dromedary market of Egypt, managed by nomadic tribes of Arabic and Nubian origins, who have always inhabited those lands. They are the ones who are paying the highest price for the conflict. For many years and despite many promises, they still don’t have citizenship. They are stateless, paperless and worried that if they move they will be arrested. based on UNHCR data about 10 million people in the world today are stateless. This includes children in certain countries who, without the proper documentation, don’t have access to public healthcare including vaccinations.

Duty of Volunteer During Covid-19 by Kyaw Zay Yar Lin

He is a volunteer in a Covid-19 rescue unit. He wears a PPE suite throughout the day while undertaking his duties. His philanthropy includes spraying biocide in public places, taking contact patients to hospitals and wrapping dead bodies in winding sheets. He transfers cadavers from hospitals, or homes, to the cemetery with other volunteers. This work is stressful and demanding. He prays to see the end of this pandemic as soon as possible. But for now, his work isn’t finished. The volunteers hold funerals in accordance with each religion. They take care of themselves by spraying biocide on each other. Now, all of the volunteers from around the world are busy and tired. They are truly altruistic people, and this essay is to express my respect and pride.

      Nemo's Garden by Giacomo d'Orlando

According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the desertification brought by climate change in recent years has already extensively reduced agricultural productivity in many regions of the world. Agriculture represents 70% of freshwater use around the globe and with the world’s population projected to increase to 10 billion by the end of the century, it has become imperative to find alternative and ecologically sustainable methods of cultivation. Nemo’s Garden – the world’s first underwater greenhouse – offers a possible solution.

This completely self-sustainable project explores an alternative farming system that could be implemented in areas where environmental or geo-morphological conditions make the growth of plants almost impossible. The encouraging results of the last few years, where more than 40 different species of plants have been successfully cultivated, gives hope that a sustainable agricultural system has been developed to help tackle the new challenges brought by climate change.

Portraits in Ashes by Gideon Mendel

As our global temperatures rise we have seen an unprecedented increase in the extremity of wildfires around the world. In 2021 I travelled to Greece, Canada and the USA to document the aftermath of fires that had destroyed homes, killed numerous people and burnt millions of acres of land. I choose not to document the burning flames, but rather to seek out their aftermath. These portraits are made across different communities and cultures around the world. My subjects pause and engage the camera, looking out from their devastated lives. While their poses may seem conventional, the context is catastrophe, and their gazes are unsettling. They are not disempowered victims: in their encounter with the camera they invite us to engage with the calamity that has befallen them, bearing witness to the impacts of climate change which will be so much worse unless meaningful action is taken.

Living in the Transition by Shunta Kimura

I photographed these pictures in Gabura Union, Bangladesh between the beginning of October and late November 2021.

Gabura Union is located on the southwestern coast of Bangladesh. It is one of the most vulnerable areas to the impacts of climate change, and many residents often suffer from its effects. These include river erosion, landslides, rising salinity levels in fresh water sources and collapsing infrastructure, caused by the tropical cyclones that occur frequently.

The purpose of this photo essay is to capture and communicate the situation for people living quietly in this transition, impacted by climate change.

Photos of microplastics – tiny plastic particles originating from manufactured products and are prevalent in seawater. They are considered pollutants and the amount of microplastics found on the ocean floor worldwide is estimated to be 14 million tonnes. Some microplastics can be detected in sea salt. Each particle has its specific origin and had its own value when it was part of a product. However, as they have been anonymised, we cannot know about the past identities and histories of each microplastic particle. Through this work, as viewers engage with them in their current form, new stories begin to emerge.

The Hidden Costs by J H Fair

For 20 years I have made hauntingly beautiful images of the industrial scars of our economy and paired them with the relevant scientific data. These tell the story of how our constant desire for more of everything and consumer decisions impacts nature and are key causes of the Climate Crisis and Extinction Crisis.

The locations around the world are found through extensive research. When I get there I hire a small plane – which allows me to fly over any barriers preventing access to these sites – and create images in which these frightening realities can be shown as abstract patterns, becoming art instead of document.

The pictures are made with the highest resolution equipment, giving them an abundance of detail and colour.

Painful Death of Birds by Mehdi Mohebi Puor

In recent years, we have witnessed the death of thousands of migratory birds in Iran’s Miankaleh Wetland – the cause is still unknown. This is a set of efforts by environmental forces to collect and bury birds.

Cut Down for Charcoal, Swallowed by the Sea 05 by Lieven Engelen

Every morning Hannah Obodai sweeps sand from the floor of what used to be her house. A storm in September flooded the coastal fishing village of Adina, Ghana – wiping out entire houses with tremendous power. In less than 50 years, Ghana’s primary rainforest has been reduced by 90%. The September storm was one of the latest examples of how global warming is accelerating and changing the face of the Earth. And how entire communities living in coastal areas are at risk from rising sea levels, resulting in migration. As long as carbon emissions continue to rise and rainforests are being reduced to irrelevance, there is nothing that will stop the immense power of an increasingly heated and acidic sea.

      Solar Graphic by Andrius Rep?ys

In 2021, Lithuania once again experienced a winter of heavy snowfalls - a result of the climate crisis and global warming. Depicted in these photographs are sustainable energy sources such as dams, wind turbines and solar batteries - the very things we need in order to slow down the occurrences of climate disasters. Two of the three main elements of Solar Graphics – seasonality and sustainable energy – organically and purposefully complement each other. Winter’s monochromatic palette helps reveal the graphic elements found in the white snow. As the land is disrupted by dark lines new images appear – a mouth full of dazzling white teeth or a robot with a surprised look on its face. The high vantage point reduces the landscape to abstraction allowing the viewer to find new meanings and interpretations in the photograph.

      Tree by Gareth Iwan Jones

This project was born of the Covid-19 lockdowns, and the impact upon my work as a portrait photographer. Inspired by my home county of Wiltshire, where the distinctive landscape features many knolls with lone trees raised above the horizon line. Unable to photograph people, I turned to my love of trees. I wondered if it was possible to take a unique portrait of these quiet giants. I chose to photograph against dusk skies and lit the trees with drones to create an otherworldly impression.

As lockdowns took hold, so did this project. I started looking into every field and up every hill for aesthetically interesting treescapes. While many people discovered the joys of walking in nature during the lockdowns, once the sun had set it was just me, the trees and the darkness, which was an experience that at first terrified me but with time I began to relish.

Life On Earth by Lorenzo Poli

Science and religions may all fall short in explaining the incredible miracle of life which, through millennials of evolution, has transformed barren land into a living planet.

Mother Earth has been regarded by humans through the centuries as a fertility goddess; water is the most incredible terrestrial element, with all living beings depending on it to thrive. Water is the common denominator of the living world.

There is an untamed world between sacred and magic, where the essence of life is safeguarded by silence, where the outer and the inner world coincide. This is what I am seeking to photograph.

As philosopher Alan Watts said: "Each one of us, not only human beings but every leaf, every weed, exists in the way it does, only because everything else around it does." And "If you go off into a far, far forest and get very quiet, you'll come to understand that you're connected with everything.

      Red Beds by Jonas Daley

Developed during the Jurassic and Tertiary period, this is a red rock system in the Himalayan orogeny. With the uplift of the Earth's crust, the hillside retreated – mainly through the collapse process. The remaining red sandstone has formed in isolation after long-term weathering, exfoliation and water erosion, resulting in strange rocks and stones .

The Earth Belongings by Majid Hojjati

Life has meaning in human beliefs with its symbols. Mountains, forests, plains, free and beautiful creatures, and clear blue skies are all creations that will come to mind when we hear the word ‘life’. Where it is free from the fence of man, and there is no trace of human presence in it, it is ‘nature’. Where humans stepped in without understanding and respecting the spirit of nature, they endangered the existence of other beings. And then from this soil, nothing but a lifeless body will remain.

The mountains will forget the flight of the eagles, and the noble howls of the horses will not be heard in the plains; and even the lion, that king of the forest, will be only a name in the books.

These elements belong to the planet and are inseparable from it, without them what is left is a cold, lost and distorted image that no longer resembles anything. Maybe it's time to weigh what we have taken from nature and what we have given it and measure what we have done with the universe.

Disturbed Landscape by Manuel Enrique González Carmona

I photographed the surroundings of Minas de Rio Tinto in the province of Huelva, Spain, throughout 2021. It is a landscape altered by man's hand in which pine forests coexist with the remains of minerals extracted from the earth and dumped copper extraction. With the passage of time, these minerals sediment and form a diversity of textures. In some situations they resemble trees, and in these cases the terrain seems to pay homage to the trees that existed before the transformation.

      Hidden Dimension by Mihails Ignats

Hidden Dimension is a photo series captured at an altitude of about 300-400 metres. A bird’s eye view that inspires me every time I take off and climb into the Latvian airspace with the pilot of an ultralight plane. The lines and shapes, natural and human-made structures, tell me something in a graphical language. I’m trying to learn this language and discover these hidden stories. My creative passion is aerial photography.

Unknown world below the ground by Martin Broen

This series was shot in the underwater cave system of the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico – the biggest underwater river system in the world, with amazingly decorated tunnels and chambers that can compete with the best gothic churches in the world.

These decorations took millennia to form in the dry caves and then got preserved when the caves flooded after the last ice age. A majestic world that is under our feet and is barely known due to the challenge of reaching and photographing it, with no natural light beyond the entry points (cenotes). These are locations that may be hours away from the closest exit to safety, through a labyrinth of underwater tunnels, but that can offer (to the daring photographer) some unique experiences to shoot.

      Caryatis 2021 by George Tatakis

Caryatis is a study of Greek women’s traditional costumes deriving from different time periods in Greece’s rich history. This project evolved out of Tatakis’ previous work, Ethos, which looked at Greek traditions and customs. Each photograph is meticulously staged; postures, attitudes and even hand placements depicted are all typical of the area from which the costume originates.

      Migrantes by Adam Ferguson

This is a series of self-portraits of migrants in Mexico, as they wait to cross the border into the United States. The life of a migrant at the border, waiting for the right moment to cross into the United States, is often in flux. To capture a piece of this uncertain journey, I mounted a medium format camera on a tripod with a cable release and then stepped back, allowing the migrants to choose the moment of capture and give them agency in the process of documenting their lives.

      Bushmeat Hunters by Brent Stirton

This is a series of bushmeat hunter portraits taken in Guyana, Gabon, the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Republic of Congo. These men are seen in an age-old act, bringing animals they have hunted back to their villages. Some of these men are hunting for other, wealthier men who have employed them, others are hunting for their families. In all cases, very little of what they hunted was consumed in the village. Bushmeat commands a high price, which increases as it gets to major cities. These days, hunting of this kind is almost always about an economy of supply and demand.

Kabul Street Portraits by Phillip Walter Wellman

At the beginning of 2021, I started to photograph people in the streets of Kabul. Foreign forces were to leave Afghanistan later in the year, and the portraits focused on those who would remain – predominantly, Afghans who sold goods or services in the streets and earned little. Everyone I photographed had different expectations for the future. No one expected to be living under the Taliban’s strict Islamic rule by the year’s end. However, on 15 August 2021, the Taliban seized Afghanistan's capital, and it instantly transformed the portraits into images of a bygone era – one meant to provide hope for Afghans, but which ultimately failed many of them. By September, nearly the entire country risked sinking into poverty, according to the UN, which warned of a “rapid, catastrophic deterioration in the lives of Afghanistan’s most vulnerable” including many of those who made a living in the streets.

Rock and Faith by Areshina Nadezhda

This is a visual story dedicated to the Old Ritualist settlements in the Altay mountains of Russia. The members of these communities profess the ‘true faith’, a form of worship that existed before reform was introduced to the Russian Orthodox Church by patriarch Nikon in the 17th century. The policy aimed to modernise both church and faith and strengthen Russia’s ties with Europe. It was met with strong resistance from religious people; especially the serfdom-bound peasants who drew great comfort from their faith and its rituals and traditions. When the government ordered for these to be changed many decided to flee in order to protect the ‘true faith’. Thus, the Altay region became one of the centres where Old Ritualists found their refuge and the opportunity to live freely. The mountains that cover the terrain ensured a secure hideout and nature’s abundant resources allowed them to establish their settlements.

During my travels and meeting the inhabitants of these Old Ritualist villages I adopted the state of mind of those who originally escaped from persecution and found their heaven on Earth among the beauty and abundance of nature. Spirituality and a deep connection to nature, became their escape as well as their foundation for a simple, sincere life. Stories like this present an opportunity to consider the principles of a more sustainable life that is built upon labour, natural resources and spiritual values. It serves as an invitation to reflect upon the historical processes of development; the condition that the modern man currently finds himself in, and also the prospects of alternative directions in which the society could develop.

Portraits – Unintended expression by Vladimir Frumin

This series reflects a person’s inner world that can be communicated without words or objects. These portraits do not capture the image the person wants to present to the world but rather leaves the viewer to interpret what is happening. Sometimes we want people to think we have more than we do. In some people, it’s the expression of their whole face or body language. In others, it’s the eyes alone – the eyes can capture and hold you tight. There is a lack of convention in some people that carries us into their world. Yet, as physically close the image is to the person, there is a distance that physical space does not cross.

      Passersby by Joan-Ramon Manchado

I usually photograph people in the street; passersby I come across with when I’m walking in different cities around the world. Photography allows me to see an underlying dimension that I could hardly perceive with the naked eye. It’s a hybrid process that begins with digital capture and ends with the completion of the blueprint, whose monochromatic tones and loss of detail contribute to emphasising the most essential elements in images. This way, without imposture or context, the faces of passersby are revealed to me in an unequivocally transcendent manner.

The Beauty of Humanity by Anna Neubauer

A lot of my work is centred on people with visible differences because I think the less diversity people see in their everyday lives, the more disconcerting they might find it – and that's something I can change. For me, diversity does not exist without inclusion. I’ve realised that as a photographer, I’ve got the transformative power to show how beautiful differences are, and to contribute to a more open, diverse, and inclusive society. Society decides what normal looks like, or what people can and can’t do. With my work, I am moving away from traditional stereotypes by creating images that promote acceptance, kindness and honesty. I am showing what being human actually looks like. With my portraits, I'd like to inspire others to join me, because sometimes all it takes is an inspiring story told through a powerful image.

      Future Studies by Luca Locatelli

One of the most characteristic symptoms of the time in which we live is the growing sense of loss of a better future, of a hypothetical tomorrow perceived as something promising and yet unknown. If we’re going to re-establish a healthy relationship with the plane, it is imperative to reflect on our attitude toward the future. In the 21st century we need to learn how to use our knowledge in a more sustainable way, find new ways to live on our planet and confront today’s critical environmental issues. Future Studies is an ongoing piece of research spanning more than ten years, aimed at triggering the viewer to join the critical debate on our precarious balance on Earth, and hopefully contribute to restoring hope for the future of mankind.

      Absolute Beginner by Oana Bakovi?

My art emerges from the need to reconnect with the beautiful nature surrounding us. As a human, I enjoy the wonders of discovery and constant advancement that define us as species, but I am also sad that we overlook the wonders that are so close to us. This feeling set me on a path of exploration that I continue to follow.

These photographs document the tragic beauty of disruptions to nature happening before our eyes. The shots, taken in my local area, are meant to draw attention to the esoteric signs that nature gives us at every step. The images were shot using a combination of ambient light and flash, sometimes ND filters. I colour-graded them in Capture One and Lightroom.

Exotic Appetite: Inside the Italian Exotic Animal Trade by Federico Borella

It's common to think that ’wet markets’ only exist in Asian countries, but in Italy there are also fairs at which thousands of exotic animals are displayed and sold, and huge profits are made.

At these fairs, exotic animals are considered collectibles. They’re often stressed, kept in plastic trays the same size as the animals they contain, and anyone can touch them. Among the stands it's not uncommon to find animals who are solitary by nature, forced to live in groups, and animals with a strong social nature isolated in plastic boxes. There is also the question of potential risks to human health.

The Fox’s Tale by Milan Radisics

Over eight months, I spent almost every night sitting at the window of my cottage in the middle of the forest – where wild animals live almost as neighbours of the villagers. The young vixen appears in the village after dusk, circles an hour and a half, and appears in a courtyard several times. I observed her movements and behaviour from the darkened room, and took the exposure remotely. I named her Roxy. I set the lights in advance, like in a studio, and waited for the protagonist to walk into the scenes. She always surprises me, showing a new side, and I have had to solve many technical, theoretical, and physical challenges in the process of photographing her. During lockdown, both sides were forced to adjust: man to the wilds of the forest, animals to the human environment.

Oceans and Seas – The Last Frontier by Graeme Purdy

Despite two thirds of the world being covered in seas and oceans, we know so little about this world. Our lack of understanding is partly driven by the remoteness and challenges in experiencing these environments. We are often content with near-shore sea life experiences: coral or rocks can bring some degree of reliable experience. But our deep oceans remain other worldly. I have been driven, and inspired, to photograph these places. To show the beauty that exists in the oceans and seas is our first step in connecting with wildlife that lives there. There are a plethora of conservation issues threatening the seas and oceans, but first we need to understand more: connect and then act. I hope this collection brings the beauty, the challenges of the oceans to the forefront of the viewer's mind. I hope we do more.

Between Art and Science - Ultraviolet Induced Visible Fluorescence Photography by Debora Lombardi

These images were created using ultraviolet induced visible fluorescence photography (UVIVF), a technique that captures the fluorescence of flowers and plants hit by UV light – and which makes visible what is generally invisible to the naked eye. Photographing in this way reveals vivid, incandescent colours – a chromatic world not detected by our eyes, but that some animals (such as bees) can perceive. I started experimenting with this technique in the darkness of my studio during the lockdown of March 2020, making it my main outlet in that equally dark period. My experimentation then continued throughout 2021, making improvements and customisations, and this series represents an excerpt.

Sea Turtles of the Mediterranean, tiebreakers of human impact on the sea by Paola Lai

Sea turtles are an endangered species with decreasing populations in the Mediterranean area. They function as tiebreakers of human pressures on the oceans: susceptible to climate change, consequent rising sea temperatures, entanglement, plastic pollution, poaching and bycatch fishing. They're an essential link in the food chain, and as they depend on the sea, a healthy sea also depends on them. This is why scientific research and conservation is vital.

This work followed the marine biologists who work at CRes, an Italian research and rescue centre that studies and supports sea turtles in the Mediterranean Sea. They collaborate with the Zooprophylactic Institute, vets, and the Regional Nature Conservation and Forestry Policy Service for the protection and conservation of these species and the sea. Participating in an international research net, their job is essential to start repairing the damages human impact is responsible for.

      Concordia by Alessandro Gandolfi

On the evening of 13 January 2012, the Costa Concordia, a cruise ship with 4229 people on board, struck shallow water near the island of Giglio. Within three hours it had sunk sideways to the bottom, a few metres from the coast. This was the largest ever cruise ship to sink, and the disaster claimed 32 lives. But what is left of that event, 10 years on?

Today the Costa Concordia no longer exists as its name has been cancelled from the Italian shipping register. The wreck, which is a symbol of the drama, was hauled up and dismantled, and most of the parts were recycled: thousands of tonnes of steel from the ship now form the foundations of Italian bridges and buildings. But traces of the Concordia can be found everywhere. These are relics that tell stories.

Travel Restriction Breakfast by Céline Pannetier

I am a documentary and street photographer: unstaged was my thing... until confinement.

Stuck home, I decided to investigate and create a series of playful, colourful pictures, with the food I enjoy. I wanted to play with the clichés that often appear when we are considering other countries’ food. Needless to say, I indulged myself with a few exquisite breakfasts after shooting. (When it comes to the food photography I shoot, I insist that no food is binned).

      Shadow by Graziella Cerveira Nunes

Nurturing another being isn’t just about feeding the body: it takes dedication, presence and affection. It’s a constant challenge – how can you give something of yourself that’s in scarce supply? The only way is to feed yourself first, but time doesn’t wait, and the others need me. This work is inspired by my maternal experience. In everyday life with children, I experiment with myself all the time. Often the taste is bitter. Sweetness suits childhood better, I know. I'm a loving mother who sometimes doesn't reach the shelf, or doesn't see the right pot. The shadow gets in the way. Obviously, motherhood is much more than fragments of shadow or light. But in this series I am interested in reflecting a little on frustrations, fears and misunderstandings. It’s anintimate dive, an opportunity for transformation.

Micro Plastic in City Space by Reinis Hofmanis

We’re surrounded by manmade materials that are very durable. Some of them we only use once, but even materials that we use for many years can lose small particles and become a source of micro plastic pollution. City dust, which accounts for 24% of micro plastics in the oceans, comes from a variety of sources.

Micro plastic particles and fibres originate from the abrasion of objects such as synthetic soles of footwear, clothes, car tyres, infrastructure and insulation materials, artificial turfs, packaging and other plastic materials that we use in our households.

Micro plastics have been found in the most remote areas of the Baltic Sea, as well as in drinking water, but the real extent and consequences of the problem are unknown.

      Silent Voice by Ichio Usui

“Don't treat food poorly.” “Leaving food uneaten is wasteful.” – These are words that are commonly spoken to children by adults at the dining table, the same that were spoken to this artist as a Japanese child. But are these words actually true? While Japan is among the lowest-ranked developed nations in terms of food self-sufficiency, it is also among the countries that produce the most food waste per person. I wanted to give a voice to the food that was sacrificed to become products that went uneaten and wasted in Japan – having elapsed past their expiration dates, or been discarded because they didn’t have the right colour or shape. This project involves placing toy eyes on the ‘subjects’ (items of food waste) to transform them into characters – an effort to visualise the lives that vanish in the process of discarding food.

After working as a commercial photographer for years, I wanted to re-discover my own voice and visual style. Like learning in school, I wanted to start from the beginning and experiment with primary shapes in the hope that their universality will resemble the basic components of our reality, time and space, thus giving a foundation for my future visual identity.

      Kuarup by Ricardo Teles

The Kuarup is a ritual of the Xingu Indigenous Brazilian to honour the illustrious dead – it is the farewell and closing of a mourning period. The celebration takes place once a year in different villages and lasts for three days. The highlight of this celebration is a competition of a martial art called Huka-huka, similar to the Greco-Roman wrestling fight, which has competitive symbolism that shows the strength and virility of the young men. These photographs were taken during a Kuarup celebration in the Afukuri village of the Kuikuro ethnic group. This year’s ritual honoured the people who lost their lives between the years 2020 and 2021: four of five were victims of Covid-19.

      Loyal Fans by Roman Vondrou?

The fans of the football club Bohemians Prague 1905 are among the most loyal in the Czech Republic. They’ve helped the club financially through collections at times when it was struggling to survive. Their loyalty, zeal and devotion to the club did not waver even when spectators were banned from watching the matches of the top football league, due to the Covid pandemic. Not wanting to miss a home match under any circumstances, they brought ladders and watched the matches over the wall of the football stadium. The stadium of Bohemians Prague 1905, nicknamed ?olí?ek, is outdated and will soon undergo a major reconstruction. But it has its own unmistakable genius loci in the Prague district of Vr?ovice.

Tokyo Twenty Twenty One by Adam Pretty

The Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Paralympics were postponed for one year and held under really unusual circumstances. Athletes and media were kept inside a bubble and tested every day, with no fans able to witness the greatest sporting show on earth. This series takes a look at the Olympic and Paralympic sports that I was assigned to cover in Tokyo. I tried to find unique and challenging angles to minimise the visual impact of not having a crowd or any fans (and atmosphere) and also to illustrate the beauty and strength of the athletes and sports as well as their emotions from slightly different angles. It was perhaps the most challenging Olympics I have ever been part of, and I can only imagine what a roller coaster of emotions the athletes were experiencing. I was very grateful when these emotions spilled over in the heat of competition.

      Asiya Mohammed by Luis Tato

Twenty-nine-year-old Asiya Mohammed is a para rower who became the first Kenyan woman ever to attend the Olympics after earning a ticket for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. Initially a para tennis player at international level, Asiya Mohammed has overcome many challenges as a physically disabled woman and orphan in Kenya, and has struggled to get funding and support. She has been living and training with her team in a hotel complex in the coastal city of Mombasa, Kenya, focusing on intense preparation for the Paralympic Games after qualifying for the Tokyo 2020 – only two years after developing interest in the sport of rowing. She dreamed of attending an Olympics Game, and opened the way for many other women in her country.

Yucum? Girls by André Pitome ávila

For the first time in history, players of indigenous origin participate in the women's state championship in Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil. Lacking sponsorship and financial support from government programmes, and far from the eyes of the general public, dozens of players at levels ranging from amateur to professional show up hoping for a chance to be discovered by a bigger team.'Gurias do Yucum?, a team from the city of Tenente Portela, does not have a playing field and trains only once a week. Among the athletes, two are indigenous Kaingang: Giza Proen?a and Claudinéia Ribeiro, who live in Reserva da Guarita in the northwest of the state. On training day, both travel 18km and when it is not possible, they send videos of themselves training at home so the coaches can give feedback. To mark the first time that indigenous athletes participate in an official championship, Giza and Claudinéia painted their legs, arms and faces with drawings characteristic of their ethnicity, to face the Internacional, a traditional and wealthy Brazilian club that has already won the world news by winning the World Championships playing against Barcelona.

      Olympic Wrestling by Bradley Kanaris

Capturing the wrestling finals at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games in August 2021 was one of the highlights of my Games coverage. It’s one of the original sports from the Ancient Olympics and it’s a great show of strength, toughness, resilience and skill. I shot this event for my client and made sure I captured the combative nature, strength and raw emotion of the great ancient art of wrestling.
